Science behind Sport

Somebody throws a ball in air and you catch it. If I ask how did you do that then a typical answer would be that you knew where the ball was going to drop and you positioned yourself in a way so you can easily catch the ball. If we see the science behind this then there is a different answer to it.
  You are through evolution capable of performing this act. Your ancestors had similar experiences and your body is adapted to performing several calculations at once, some conscious and some unconscious ones. . . . .
Through evolution the human body is adapted in a way that it can make adjustments for all the factors, such as distance, wind and the weight of the ball. These adjustments are done in our head and they are called physics, we just don't call it that. This physics we do, we are capable for it because of our experiences. Some are our own and others are because of our evolution.
 Physics is the branch of science that deals with the physical world. The physics that we perform in our head is mostly related to branches of mechanics and study of motion. Seeing a slow motion replay of football or a simple catch can explain a lot of basic physics.

 When a ball leaves a player it follows a parabolic path, it always follows a curve. This is because the ball is influenced by gravity. As the ball travels up, gravity slows it down until it stops briefly at its peak height; the ball then comes down, and gravity accelerates it until it hits the ground. This is the path of any object that is launched or thrown (football, arrow, ballistic missile) and is called projectile motionThe velocity of the ball and the angle of the kick are the major factors that determine:

  • How long the ball will remain in the air (hang-time)
  • How high the ball will go
  • How far the ball will go
This is just some physics involved in sports. If you want a more detailed information you should Google for more of it. Remember, this all knowledge is instinctive and players most often don't know about it. By knowing this we realize how amazing sports is and how much it is related to science.
